About Us

About the Learning Center for Young Children (LCYC)

The Learning Center for Young Children (LCYC) is a parent-participation preschool joyfully serving the Kensington community for over six decades. As a mission of Warner Memorial Presbyterian Church, we are dedicated to nurturing young minds and fostering lifelong friendships among families. We are licensed by Maryland State Department of Education (Lic. Num. 255085) and hold a Maryland EXCELS Level 4 rating.

Our History

Founded in 1959 as the Warner Christian Day School, LCYC was established as an inclusive alternative to segregated schools and to serve as an outreach to young families in the neighborhood. In the early 1980s, we embraced the name Learning Center for Young Children to better reflect our commitment to early childhood education and parent involvement.

Our Mission and Values

At LCYC, we are committed to preparing young children for both school and life by providing a nurturing environment focused on education, progress, and growth. We warmly welcome all families, offering a safe space where children can celebrate their unique cultures, homes, and experiences alongside their peers and teachers. Parental involvement is at the heart of our philosophy, encouraging families to actively participate in the learning process both at school and at home. Through inclusive community events and a focus on genuine respect and care, we cultivate a sense of belonging and camaraderie among students, parents, and staff.

Parent Participation

We believe that the relationship between parents, teachers, and staff is the foundation of our school community. When parents engage with LCYC, it demonstrates to children that their education and personal development are valued. This involvement helps children feel secure, accepted, and confident to fulfill their unique potential.

LCYC offers both Participation and Non-Participation tuition levels:

  • Participation Tuition: Families choose one participation job for the academic year. Most join Classroom Co-oping, while a limited number of non-classroom co-op positions are available in fundraising and administrative roles. All roles require a minimum commitment of 3–4 hours monthly.
  • Non-Participation Tuition: Families who opt out of participation roles pay a higher tuition rate.

Community Engagement

We value the importance of community and offer various opportunities for families to connect and engage:

  • Playground Playdates: Join us in August at nearby parks to meet new and returning families.
  • Back to School Night: At least one adult from each family is required to attend this event, typically held the last week of August before school begins.
  • Housekeeping Shifts: Each family is required to sign up for and complete one housekeeping shift per year (held the first Saturday of every month) or pay a buyout fee.
  • Annual Spring Auction: Families are required to donate one silent auction item to support this important fundraising event or pay a buyout fee.
  • Community and Fundraising Events: We encourage all families to attend and support LCYC’s various events throughout the school year.

By actively participating in our community, families enrich the LCYC experience for everyone involved. We invite you to join us in creating a welcoming and supportive environment for all.
